It can grow up to 20-30 meters long on supporting trees or other supports.
Leaf and bark type:
Chinese Wisteria is a vine. The leaves are pinnately compound, with 9-13 leaflets on each leaf. The leaves are shiny and green.
Where does it grow and in what conditions:
Native to China, it has spread all over the Eastern side of the United States. It is a hardy plant that will prefers semi moist soils. It is shade tolerant but requires sunlight to bloom. The vine can form a trunk-like tree and survive for up to 100 years.
Pollinators & Seed dispersal:
Hummingbirds and bees pollinate the flowers. The seeds are usually wind dispersed.
Fruit:
The fruit of Wisteria are velvetty, brown seed pods. Each pod contains 1-8 seeds.
Uses:
Chinese Wisteria is an ornamental plant that was brought to the United States in 1817 for horticultural purposes. The flowers have a very sweet scent that is very strong thanks to the many flowers on the vine.
